Authentic SHUNGITE from Karelia, Russia
Modern ŌM has sourced authentic Shungite directly from Karelia, Russia since 2015. Every shipment is checked for authenticity when it arrives, giving us confidence in the origin and quality of the Shungite used throughout our collections.
What Is Authentic Shungite?
Shungite is a naturally occurring, carbon-rich stone found primarily in the Republic of Karelia in northwestern Russia.
Known for its distinctive black color and unusual carbon composition, Shungite has been used in the region for centuries and has more recently become known around the world for water purification, grounding, wellness, and EMF-related applications.
Not everything sold today as “Shungite,” however, is necessarily authentic Karelian Shungite.
That is why where your Shungite comes from matters.

Where Does Real Shungite Come From?
The most significant deposits of authentic Shungite are found in Karelia, Russia, particularly around the Lake Onega region.
The stone takes its name from the Karelian village of Shunga, located near one of its historically important deposits.
Modern ŌM sources its Shungite directly from Karelia. By maintaining a long-standing relationship with our supplier rather than purchasing through unknown resellers, we know where our material comes from and can maintain consistency and authenticity of all our products.

How Modern ŌM Sources Its Shungite
We have been working with Shungite since 2015.
Our Shungite comes directly from Karelia, where the raw stone is mined and selected before being transformed into the spheres, pyramids, plates, and other pieces you see in our collections.

Some pieces are handcrafted in Karelia, while others become part of jewelry and products we make by hand here in North Carolina.
When a new shipment arrives, we always check the material for authenticity before offering it to our customers.
For us, authenticity isn't simply a label on a product. It begins with knowing the origin and source of the stone itself.

How Can You Tell If Shungite Is Real?
Genuine Shungite can vary considerably in appearance.
Depending on its composition and how it has been cut or polished, it may be matte black, charcoal gray, slightly metallic, smooth and polished, or naturally rough.
Natural Shungite may also contain:
Depending on its composition and how it has been cut or polished, it may be matte black, charcoal gray, slightly metallic, smooth and polished, or naturally rough.
Natural Shungite may also contain:
- Mineral veins and inclusions
- Pyrite or other naturally occurring minerals
- Small pits, lines, or irregularities
- Variations in color and texture
- Natural markings revealed during cutting and polishing
These variations are normal characteristics of natural stone and are one reason two genuine Shungite pieces may not look exactly alike.
Authenticity should therefore not be judged by appearance alone.
The source of the material, the reliability of the seller, and appropriate material testing provide much better indicators than whether a stone looks perfectly black or perfectly uniform.

Does Real Shungite Conduct Electricity?
One unusual characteristic commonly associated with Shungite is its electrical conductivity.
Because Shungite contains carbon, many pieces can conduct electricity to varying degrees. A simple conductivity test can be useful as one indicator when evaluating Shungite.
However, conductivity alone should not be considered definitive proof of authenticity. Other carbon-containing or conductive materials can produce similar results.
We consider provenance and material verification much more meaningful than relying on a single at-home test.

Regular Shungite vs. Elite Shungite
Shungite occurs in different forms and with different concentrations of carbon.
Regular Shungite
Regular Shungite is the material most commonly used for carved objects such as:
- Pyramids
- Spheres
- Cubes
- Plates
- Harmonizers
- Massage and wellness tools
- Beads
It is generally black to dark gray and can be cut, shaped, engraved, and polished.
Elite Shungite
Elite Shungite, also known as Noble Shungite, is a much rarer form of the stone.
It typically has a higher carbon content and a distinctive silvery or metallic appearance. Unlike regular Shungite, Elite Shungite is brittle and difficult to shape, so it is most often offered in its natural form or incorporated carefully into jewelry.
Elite Shungite represents only a small fraction of Shungite deposits - less than 1% - making larger intact pieces especially uncommon.

Why Does My Shungite Have Veins or Marks?
Because Shungite is a natural geological material, variations are expected.
White, golden, rust-colored, or metallic-looking lines and inclusions can occur naturally within the stone. Pyrite and other minerals may be present alongside the Shungite.
Polished objects can also reveal variations that were hidden inside the raw material before it was cut.
These characteristics do not automatically mean a Shungite piece is defective or inauthentic. In many cases, they are simply evidence of the stone's natural mineral composition.
We do not expect two pieces of Shungite to be perfectly identical — and we don't believe they should be.

How to Avoid Fake Shungite
When buying Shungite, look beyond claims such as “genuine,” “natural,” or “authentic.”
Ask:
Where does the Shungite come from?
A reputable seller should be able to identify the origin of its material.
Does the seller specialize in Shungite?
Experience matters, particularly when distinguishing natural variations from questionable material.
Does every piece look unnaturally identical?
Natural stone varies. Perfect uniformity across natural pieces can be a reason to ask more questions.
Does the seller explain the difference between regular and Elite Shungite?
They are distinctly different materials and should not be presented as interchangeable.
Is the seller transparent about natural inclusions and imperfections?
Authentic stone does not need to look flawless.
