Shungite FAQ

A. Shungite is a natural mineral of organic origin, believed to be around 2 billion years old.


It is a specific form of carbon - a non-crystalline, non-graphitic, fullerene-like carbon, with a unique set of macro- and microelements, structure, and properties.

A: Shungite mineral comes from ancient deposits near Lake Onega in the Shun’ga area of the Karelia region of Russia. It's the only place where Shungite is mined in its pure form. The largest Shungite deposit in the world, Zazhoginsky mine, is located on Zaonezhie peninsula on lake Onega.

A: Shungite contains varying concentrations of carbon. Elite (or Noble) Shungite is 90 - 98% carbon, while other forms of Shungite range from 29 - 80% carbon. Shungite also contains sodium, oxygen, and hydrogen.

A: Shungite has some iron infusions in it and rust-looking spots are the result of iron oxidation. It is a normal process and is not harmful. You can try to clean the stone carefully using a toothbrush.

Shungite stones also often have infusions of pyrite and crystal quartz that often look like streaks and veins, and make each piece unique.

A: Shungite is generally divided into four types depending on the amount of carbon in it.

ELITE or NOBLE Shungite. It has a shiny silvery black luster and contains 90 - 98% carbon, making it light and fairly fragile.

This purest and most rare form of Shungite is found in less than 1% of all Shungite deposits. When discovered, it is extracted very carefully by hand. Because of its fragility, Elite Shungite can’t be used for cutting and shaping, and every stone has a unique shape. While expensive, it is by far the best for water treatment.

PETROVSKI Shungite. It is semi-dull and black in color, it contains 70%-80% carbon. This type is used most often for municipal or industrial water purification in Russia.

BLACK or REGULAR Shungite. (Sometimes referred to as Type II) Black in color, it is
generally matte or has dull luster when polished and contains 30 - 60% carbon. This type represents the largest deposits found in Karelia and is shaped and
polished to make all forms of objects (spheres, pyramids, plates, and so on).

GRAY Shungite. Has a dull gray color. It contains 4 - 22% carbon and is generally used as building material and for other industrial purposes.

A: Both polished and unpolished Shungite provide the same effects. The only difference is in the way they look.

A: Shungite is not a crystal, it is a mineraloid. Based on the Russian research there is no need to clear Shungite because of its unique structure. it doesn’t “collect” negative energies, it transforms them.

A. Yes. The simplest way is to check the conductivity of the sample using a DVOM (Digital Volt/Ohm Meter). You can see examples of this in our videos about authentication found on may of our product pages.

A. Shungite can neutralize a significant number of toxins making it excellent for water purification.

Shungite is an effective sorbent for the removal of almost all harmful organic and inorganic compounds including pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria, and other microorganisms, nitrates, volatile organics, pharmaceuticals, chlorine, fluoride from contaminated water.

Shungite also enriches the water with fullerenes, which possess health benefits. When placed in water, the fullerenes in Shungite attract and neutralize waterborne contaminants. Shungite water contains natural antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, making it beneficial to our cells and tissues.

A: A Fullerene is a spherical carbon molecule. It is named after Buckminster Fuller because it resembles his geodesic dome in shape.

The size of the Fullerene molecule included in Shungite is 1nm. This is three times smaller than DNA and hundred times smaller than a virus. Fullerene molecules can pass a cell wall without damaging the membrane.

These molecules are largely responsible for the healing properties of Shungite and its effectiveness for water purification and reducing body inflammation.

With extended exposure Shungite will slightly raise the pH of water. This increased acidity is found to work like apple cider vinegar and lemon juice in that it actually lowers the pH in the body.

A: Our LIVING WATER Kits contain only ELITE (NOBLE) Shungite, the most potent and efficient form of this mineral.

Because ELITE has a much higher percentage of organic carbon (up to 98%) with significantly more Fullerenes than lower grades. It is more effective in neutralizing harmful contaminants and eliminating bad odor. It purifies and infuses water with powerful antioxidants, making it more bio-available to your body.

A. The pouches included are for use in vessels that you drink from directly, like a sports, or bicycle, bottle that you tip up to drink. The pouches contain the stones to prevent them from being ingested. Under other circumstances, where you can control the movement of the stones, the pouches are not required.

A: Glass or enamel vessels are best. Containers of stainless steel are the only acceptable metal ones.

A. Under normal use, the Elite stones in our water kits will remain active for decades. See Q8 below for maintenance suggestions.

A. Generally, rinse well under the running water and place them under direct sunlight to dry out.

If you use Shungite to treat and purify water, depending on the quality of your water, do this once every several months to physically clean and restore the filtering capacity of the stone:

o In a glass bowl, mix one liter of warm water with Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) in the proportion of one Teaspoon of soda for a liter of water.

o Put your stones to the solution and leave for several hours. This removes any accumulated material on the surface of the stones.

o Thoroughly rinse the stones and place out to dry.

A: Shungite can be consumed orally and/or applied topically.

Here are a few suggestions on how to use the water:

- for drinking

- for cooking and making tea/coffee

- in sports water bottles

- for watering plants and in flower vases

- for pets
- topically, on burns, insect bites, small wounds, to get rid of rashes and other skin problems

A: Drinking 2-3 glasses a day is great for optimum health benefit and helps the body to function at its best.

- place your smart devices, cell phone and tablets, next to bigger size Shungite objects or on or next to a Shungite brick, to cancel their negative effects

- place a Shungite object next to your computer and other electronic devices

- put a sphere in your bedroom for better sleep and relaxation

- place a Shungite EMF Guardian Mat under your device if you use it devices on your lap
