What Is Authentic Shungite, Exactly?
Shungite is a Precambrian mineral found almost exclusively in the Karelia region of northwestern Russia, near Lake Onega. What makes it extraordinary — and unlike any other mineral on Earth — is its carbon structure. Authentic Shungite contains naturally occurring fullerenes: hollow, cage-like carbon molecules (C60 and C70) that give Shungite its remarkable ability to neutralize contaminants, interact with electromagnetic fields, and act as a powerful antioxidant.
The key word is naturally occurring. Fullerenes can be synthesized in a lab, but Shungite is the only known natural mineral that contains them. That's what makes authentic, high-grade Karelian Shungite irreplaceable.
The Three Grades of Shungite

Type I — Elite (Noble) Shungite
The rarest and most powerful form. Contains 90–98% organic carbon with the highest concentration of fullerenes. Type II — Black (Pelinite) Shungite

Type III — Low-Carbon Shungite
Contains 10–35% carbon. Dull black, often used in construction and agriculture in Russia. Less effective for wellness purposes but commonly sold online as premium Shungite.
Important: Much of what is sold as "Shungite" online — especially very cheap, uniform, perfectly smooth pieces — is Type III at best, or not Shungite at all.
How We Test Our Shungite
Every shipment of Shungite that arrives at Modern ŌM goes through our verification process before it ever reaches your hands. Here's what we check:

1. Conductivity Testing
Authentic Shungite conducts electricity. This is one of the most reliable at-home tests for genuine Shungite, and it's what we use as a first-pass check on every shipment. We use a digital continuity meter, but for at-home testing you can use a simple circuit with a battery, LED light, and two wires — if the LED lights up, the piece is electrically conductive. Fake Shungite will not conduct electricity.
2. Visual and Tactile Inspection
Elite Shungite has a distinctive silvery, metallic sheen — almost mirror-like in the right light. It's extremely brittle and will leave black carbon marks on your hands and fingers. If a piece labeled "Elite Shungite" is perfectly smooth, uniformly black, and doesn't mark your fingers, be skeptical.
3. Origin Verification
We work directly with our supplier at the Zazhoginskoye quarry in Karelia — the largest and most reputable Shungite deposit in the world. We maintain documented supply chain records for every shipment. If a seller cannot tell you exactly where their stone was mined and by whom, that's a serious red flag.
4. Weight and Density
Authentic Shungite has a specific density of approximately 2.1–2.4 g/cm³. Pieces that feel unusually light for their size may not be genuine.
Red Flags to Watch For When Buying Shungite
Whether you're shopping with us or anyone else, here's what should give you pause:
• No country of origin stated — authentic Shungite comes from Karelia, Russia. Period.
• Prices that seem too good — genuine Elite Shungite is rare. Very cheap "Elite" pieces are almost always mislabeled.
• Perfect uniformity — natural Shungite is irregular. Perfectly identical pieces suggest synthetic or imitation material.
• No conductivity claims or testing information — reputable sellers will mention this.
• Vague sourcing language — "sourced from Russia" is not the same as "from the Zazhoginskoye quarry in Karelia."
• No carbon content information — legitimate sellers can tell you whether their product is Type I, II, or III.
Why Karelia Is the Only Source That Matters
Shungite has been found in trace deposits in a handful of other countries — Austria, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kazakhstan. But none of these deposits come close to the Karelian deposits in terms of purity, carbon content, or fullerene concentration.
The Zazhoginskoye deposit on the Zaonezhie peninsula, Lake Onega, is the world's largest and most studied Shungite source. It has been mined and researched for centuries — Peter the Great reportedly used Shungite-filtered water for his soldiers during the Great Northern War, making it one of the earliest documented uses of water filtration in Russian history.

Test Your Shungite at Home

What you need:
• One battery (1.5v - AA or similar)
• One small LED bulb (any color - be mindful of polarity)
• Two short lengths of wire with alligator clips or exposed ends
How to do it:
1. Connect one wire to the positive terminal of the battery and the other end to one leg of the LED
2. Connect the second wire to the negative terminal of the battery
3. Touch both free wire ends to your Shungite piece simultaneously
4. If the LED lights up — your Shungite is electrically conductive and genuine
Elite Shungite will light the LED brightly. Polished Type II will light it as well, though sometimes more faintly. If nothing happens, ask your seller some hard questions.
